Local Media Coverage Got You Down?

A recent phone call was placed to the John Carroll University athletic department that expressed disappointment over the failure of the Cleveland Plain Dealer to report on Mike Moran's recent 300th career victory.

The caller wondered why was this story absent from the Plain Dealer?

Good question.

How about another question -- How did a story run in the Lake County News Herald on Thursday morning about coach winning his 300th game ... but the same story did not run in the Cleveland Plain Dealer? Was it the sports information department not sending the information out ... or an editorial decision made at the Cleveland Plain Dealer that nixed the story?

The same thing happened in Sunday's paper. No story on John Carroll's school record 14th win ... but there was a three-sentence blurb on John Carroll's women's basketball team winning its 4th in a row. It was the only small college mention in Sunday's paper -- men or women.

While John Carroll appreciates the interest of passionate and loyal supporters who are upset about the lack of media coverage, calling the school to complain will not produce the results you seek.

There is a better way. And it will take more than one person to shoulder the burden.

Our plea? Direct your calls, letters and emails elsewhere ... like the newsrooms of the local media.

Our advice? Call or write regularly ... not just to complain but to praise.

Because up to now, the only people hearing your discontent are people on the campus.

Here's a case in point. Terry Pluto wrote a column (see link below) on coach Moran, and received a grand total of four comments on cleveland.com. Ohio State had a column on analyzing skill positions for the 2009 season, and received five on the first day.

Your silence is deafening, and that is what is driving newspapers and TV stations to look away from the small colleges. When they don't hear from you, good or bad, the message sent is that there is not enough interest to warrant the space or time.

Cavs stories, Indians stories, Browns stories, Ohio State stories are always going to get their play. There is a very large interest in those organizations and programs.

What hurts the John Carroll's of the world is that there is a perceived notion from the local media that if the fan base is small and uninspired, why should it be covered?

It would be easy to blame the John Carroll sports information department. There is always room for improvement, and the folks there are aware of it. But if one looks at the website, its not as if the information is not out there.

Nor is it a question of effort, because as mentioned before ... on that same Thursday morning that the Plain Dealer did not cover Mike Moran's historic achievement, the Lake County News Herald did run a story on coach winning his 300th game. Seems odd, doesn't it.

In fact, there is more effort being put into the disemination of information now than ever before, with more media produced by the school (SportsTime Ohio broadcasts, webcasting home events, WJCU on the radio and through the internet, live stats, etc) than most small colleges can claim. One can make the argument that the advent of the internet makes schools like John Carroll, Baldwin-Wallace and Case Reserve less dependent on the media than they once were.

This has become all the more important considering newspapers are suffering tremendous drops in readership, which has resulted in lower advertsing revenue and reductions in staffing. The smaller staffs are spread thinner, and there are fewer pages to sill. Therefore, decisions are being made daily on what to and what not to cover.

While the information is getting out, there is still the important part of the equation regarding the decision to do something with it. Just as the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water ...

It becomes imperative that, if you want to see the situation improve and if you are a John Carroll loyalist, make your voice heard. The more interest that they receive from you, than the more interest they will have in us. A resounding reponse from the masses will have more impact than one sports information director could ever have.

The goal of this posting is to make people aware that they can be the voice of change. Just make sure your voice is one that is constructive and complimentary as opposed to critical and vindictive.

Remember ... if you are seeing less and less John Carroll on TV, and reading less and less of the Blue Streaks in the paper, why call the school and preach to the choir?

Preach to those who need to hear your message.

JCU Swimming & Diving vs. Hiram

8:30 P.M. - On the women's side, the final score was JCU 120, Hiram College 106. On the men's side, the finish was just as close, with JCU 112, Hiram College 106. This is JCU's last home meet of the season.

8:27 P.M. - In the end, it was the 200 Yard Freestyle Relays that made all the difference. Hiram's Katie Piedomenico, Gillian Millwood, Ashlynn Krohn and Amy Kocka combined to win the women's relay with a time of 1:47.15. JCU was right behind, with Andrea Kovacs, Liana Sved, Heidi Benson and Lindsay Pickut finishing with a time of 1:49.03. On the men's side, both the JCU "A" and "B" relay teams finished with a 1-2 punch. Alex Vershchagin, Nick Grady, Eric Davis and Tony Russo all worked together for first place, with a time of 1:33.46.

8:23 P.M. - With just a relay left for the men and the women, here is an update on the team standings. For the men, Hiram College is leading, 106 to 97. For the women, JCU is leading 116 to 97.

8:21 P.M. - Once again, the name Travis Subda is at the top of the list. Hiram's Subda won the Men's 200 Yard Breaststroke, with a time of 2:19.18. JCU's Andy Petraska was the closest Blue Streak to Subda, finishing third with a time of 2:35.83.

8:17 P.M. - With all the diving events completed, that leaves just four events left this evening in University Heights. The last "first" event is the Women's 200 Yard Breaststroke. Winner of this event was Hiram College's Brittany Cowden with a time of 2:41.05. The closest JCU swimmer was Emma Atkinson, who finished with a time of 2:42.07 for a second place finish.

8:08 P.M. - At the end of the 3 Meter Diving, JCU's Stanton Kochanek won on the men's side with a score of 197.20. On the women's side, Jen Fowler of Hiram College won the 3 Meter Diving with a score of 185.65. JCU's Lauren Singley was second with 177.30 and Blue Streak Deanna Graber was third with a score of 177.20.

7:46 P.M. - Closing in at the end of the meet, 3 Meter Diving is up next. After a little scoring issue, we are now ready to start up once again.

7:41 P.M. - Santiago Morales has left his mark in University Heights, again winnning an event. This time, it was the Men's 500 Yard Freestyle, victorious with a time of 5:00.92. Nick Grady, a JCU sophomore, was in second place with 5:10.32.

7:35 P.M. - John Carroll's Heidi Benson stole the show in the Women's 500 Yard Freestyle, winning with a time of 5:34.65. Her teammate Liana Sved was second, with a time of 5:38.08.

7:28 P.M. - In the Men's 200 Yard Backstroke, Zach Wegman of Hiram won with a time of 2:05.54. It was another nailbiter though, with John Carroll's Blake Pinchot finishing second with a time of 2:05.59.

7:26 P.M. - Things are moving right along at the Johnson Natatorium, with the Women's 200 Yard Backstroke being the latest event. Samantha Mossman of John Carroll won, with a time of 2:15.11.

7:25 P.M. - In the Men's 100 Yard Freestyle, Hiram's Travis Subda won, with a final time of 48.84.

7:21 P.M. - JCU's women's swimming team continues to pull away from Hiram, with senior Andrea Kovacs winning the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 56.06. Fellow senior Heather Gilmour finished second, with a time of 57.07.

7:19 P.M. - With the Men's 200 Yard Butterfly completed, Santiago Morales has won yet another event this evening, finishing with a time of 2:02.65. Blue Streak Eric Davis finished second.

7:15 P.M. - The Women's 200 Yard Butterfly winner was JCU's Brittany Krauth, who had a time of 2:21.07. The next swimmer, Hiram's Amelia Dorschel, was over seven seconds behind Krauth.
7:09 P.M. - Now after diving, let's see the results. For the women's 1 meter diving, Hiram's Jen Fowler finished first, with a final score of 201.65. In second and third place were JCU's Lauren Singley and Deanna Graber. For men's 1 meter diving, JCU's Stanton Kochanek was first with a score of 206.15.

6:50 P.M. - After about 45 solid minutes of swimming, we have moved into the diving events this evening.

6:41 P.M. - Hiram College returned to winning in the Men's 200 Yard IM, with Travis Subda winning with a time of 2:07.37. Currently through this event, the men's team score is Hiram 46, John Carroll 41.

6:39 P.M. - Samantha Mossman continues the Blue Streaks' trend of winning. She won the Women's 200 Yard IM, with a time of 2:21.84. Through this event, JCU's women's team is leading in the team scoring, 47-40.

6:38 P.M. - Now JCU is on a roll. In the Men's 50 Yard Freestyle, Blue Streak freshman Alex Vershchagin beat his teammate David Perchinske with a time of 22.83 to Perchinske's 22.91.

6:36 P.M. - Andrea Kovacs, one of the senior leaders on the JCU women's swimming team, won the Women's 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 25.96.

6:35 P.M. - Hiram's Santiago Morales won the Men's 200 Yard Freestyle, with a time of 1:48.50. JCU's Eric Davis was second, with a time of 1:50.82

6:30 P.M. - A much shorter race this time around, with the Women's 200 Yard Freestyle. Hiram continues to just top the Blue Streaks, this time with Amy Kocka finishing first with a time of 2:05.27 to JCU's Liana Sved's time of 2:05.74. It doesn't get much closer than that!

6:27 P.M. - Another long race, another successful win for Hiram. This time, it was Zach Wegman finishing with a time of 1:12.05. Teammate Adam Roark was in second, with JCU freshman Alex Valigosky in third.

6:15 P.M. - The 1000 Yard Freestyle takes a long time to complete, but in the end, it was all worth it for Hiram College's Amelia Dorschel. She finished with a time of 11:33.69, right ahead of JCU's Heather Gilmour, who finished with a time of 11:37.18

6:03 P.M. - The men's 200 Yard Medley Relay proved to be successful once again for JCU, with the JCU Men's "A" Relay Team of Blake Pinchot, David Perchinske, Brandon Carey and Ryan Flaherty bringing home the win. Their time was 1:47.65.

6:00 P.M. - To start off the night we have the Women's 200 Yard Medley Relay. Coming in first was the JCU Women's Relay "A" Team, with Samantha Mossman, Melissa Fillmore, Brittany Krauth and Heather Gilmour combining for a final time of 1:57.75. Their counterparts, JCU's "B" Relay Team, came in second place.

Carroll Classic Day Two

In team scoring, the John Carroll University men's team won the Swim Classic, with a score of 1,494. Ohio Wesleyan was second, with 1026, then Notre Dame College (493) and Urbana University (59).

On the women's side, Ohio Wesleyan University finished first as a team, with 1191.5. Notre Dame was second, with 1170. John Carroll women's team finished third with 1093, then Marshall University (763.5) and Urbana University (60).

Winners of the Men's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay was the John Carroll University "A" team, with Max Wilberding, David Perchinske, Nick Grady and Alex Vereshchagin. They had a time of 3:21.01.

The Women's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay was won by Marshall University. Swimmers Meghan Fillinger, Meghan Robinson, Karli Alsop and Lauren Fairbanks put together a time of 3:49.82. John Carroll's "A" Relay team of Andrea Kovacs, Heidi Benson, Liana Sved and Katie Mathews finished third with an overall time of 3:53.88.

With a ten-minute break before the Relay events, let's update you on the team standings. John Carroll's men's team is in first place, with 1,317 points. Ohio Wesleyan University is closest to JCU, with 855 points for second place. The Blue Streaks' women's team is in third, with 946 points. They are behind Notre Dame College (1049) and Ohio Wesleyan (1027.5). Still to come are the Women's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay and the Men's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.

Men's 100 Yard Butterfly winner was Eric Davis from John Carroll. He won with a time 53.74. Teammates John Reynolds and Brandon Carey finished third and fourth, respectively.

The Women's 100 Yard Butterfly winner was John Carroll's Katie Mathews with a time of 1:02.24.

The Men's 200 Yard Breaststroke winner was Ohio Wesleyan's David Gatz. He won by over 21 seconds, with a time of 2:09.21. His own teammate, Nathaniel Cook, was in second with a time of 2:30.57.

Winner of the Women's 200 Yard Breaststroke was JCU's Melissa Fillmore, who beat her preliminary time of 2:40.61 to finish with a finals time of 2:35.12.

Men's 200 Yard Freestyle winner was Chris Tuttle from Notre Dame College with a time of 1:51.99. JCU's Nick Grady finished second, just a few seconds behind Tuttle with a 1:53.05 mark.

Women's 200 Yard Freestyle winner was Notre Dame College's Emily Whittington. She won with a time of 2:03.44.

Men's 100 Yard Freestyle winner was Cameron McRae from Notre Dame College. He won with a time of 54.38.

Women's 100 Yard Backstroke winner was Marshall University's Camilla Overup with a time of 1:03.92. JCU's Samantha Mossman placed second with a time of 1:04.34.

Men's 50 Yard Freestyle winner was Alex Vereshchagin from John Carroll with a time of 21.86. Teammate Max Wilberding was second with a time of 22.55.

Women's 50 Yard Freestyle winner was JCU's own Andrea Kovacs with a time of 25.55.

Men's 400 IM winner was Kevin Fahey from Ohio Wesleyan University with a time of 4:32.11. JCU's Tom Barden was second with a time of 4:52.40.

Women's 400 IM winner was Emily Whittington from Notre Dame College with a time of 4:50.93. JCU's top swimmer, Brittany Krauth, finished fourth overall with a time of 4:55.53, with teammate Heidi Benson right behind her in fifth place with a time of 5:07.68.

JCU Wrestling takes on Cleveland State in its first home match of season

JCU and Cleveland State are underway in this battle between two teams from Northeast Ohio. Bloggers will be updating the site after each weight class, so stay tuned!

125 - Senior Elie Naoum had to go up against a youngster in Cleveland State freshman Jordan Keller. Keller hails from Wichita, Kansas - pretty far away from Cleveland! I heard from some fans that he was a true freshman, and proved to be pretty impressive. Naoum held his own in the first few minutes of the match, but Keller proved to be too much in the end. He would go on to beat Naoum, 13-6.

133 - This match had a little bit of extra meaning for the blogger. JCU's wrestler, Kevin Nycz, went to my alma mater, Holy Name, and had a very successful wrestling career for the Green Wave. He's in his first year of wrestling at JCU after taking a year off between high school and collegiate wrestling. He faced CSU sophomore Josh Paviloda. Unfortunately for Nycz, it was all Paviloda in this match-up, as he won 7-0.

141 - So far, JCU has had little luck versus the Vikings of CSU. Blue Streak Chris Romeo tried to change that in the 141 match against Lawrence Cavello. No one scored in the first period, making this a close one. Both wrestlers are quick on their feet, and the DeCarlo Center is the loudest its been for any match thus far. But as quick as it was loud, it was quiet again. Romeo could not get out a lock, and Cavello won 4-0.

149 - Won of JCU's most successful seniors is up next in senior Dan Mizener. So far, he and Cleveland State senior Antonio Nicholson are providing quite the match for spectators. After the first period, there is a tie, 4-4. You can tell that both Nicholson and Mizener have had years of experience wrestling at the collegiate level. On the bright side, Mizener has scored the only JCU points since Naoum in the 125 weight class. But he is still trailing Nicholson. But wait - he just tied it up, making this match one that will go down to the wire! With just 35 seconds left, Mizener trails by one, and has just taken the lead, 9-8. Mizener wins! He is the first Blue Streak to beat a Vikings wrestler tonight.

157 - Cleveland State freshman Corey Carlo wins by forfeit.

165 - JCU's Devon Jurczak gets the nod in this weight class, versus freshman Dustin Doty. So far, Jurczak looks like a star, leading 4-0 early on. If he can hold on, that will help JCU inch even closer to the Vikings' 15-3 lead. Things got a little fiery for a couple minutes between Doty and Jurczak, with a few swings taken between the two wrestlers. With order restored, the two are back in the ring. Wow, Jurczak has a great takedown, one that gets the crowd roaring. He easily beat Doty, 12-1.

174- Moving up a weight class for the Blue Streaks is junior Travis Hammer, and he is up against a guy that has just one year up on him - CSU senior JT Miller. After a slow start, JCU is inching back, and a win by Hammer could put them even closer. CSU's Miller looks like a pretty strong guy, and he has had some pretty solid slams of Hammer to the mat - maybe it's just me, but it makes my own body hurt a little bit. However, after two periods, neither competitor has scored a point, making this match pretty intense. Unfortunately for Hammer, Miller gets the upperhand in the final minutes, and wins 8-0.

184 - JCU freshman Bryan Steinmetz gets the forfeit, making it CSU 19, JCU 13.

197 - Sophomore Jim Nemunaitis is now facing another sophomore, CSU's Eric Schwartz. After the first period, Schwartz is awarded a point because of a violation on Nemunaitis - it looks like he walked off the mat before he was supposed to, to change his head gear. Hopefully it won't be too costly for him in the ring. He quickly is able to get that point back. In the end, that one point does not matter, as he wins be a grand margin of 14-3.

Heavyweight- I'll admit, I didn't think it would be this close. But with just the heavyweight class to wrestle, JCU trails CSU 19-17. Right now, the Blue Streaks' junior Tim Lambert is up against Viking senior Rashard Goff. This match can be a deciding factor in a Blue Streak win or loss as a team. Both of these guys are putting up quite the fight. Lambert gets taken down pretty hard, and it looks like the breath gets knocked out of him for a minute. But he's up once again, and ready to go against Goff. In the end, though, Goff's strength gets the best of Lambert, and he wins by a fall with 13.7 seconds left in the second period. Cleveland State wins, 25-17. JCU will just have to wait until next year to beat the Vikings; but several individual wrestlers had great successes today against CSU.

The Blue Streaks will travel to Mount Union on Dec. 2 for its first OAC dual meet of the season. The start time is 7:30 p.m.

2:02 pm - JCU and Ohio Northern have just kicked off, beginning this OAC match up in the playoffs. So far no big plays, but knowing these two teams, anythig is bound to happen.

2:05 pm - Wow, a throw-in has just resulted in an Ohio Northern goal! The JCU defense broke down a bit, and ONU's Christian Huelsman allows the Polar Bears to take an early 1-0 lead - and JCU is not used to being behind.

2:10 pm - Foul called right outside of the box, with JCU getting to take the penalty kick. Jake Milli takes it, but his kick was far right, and appeared as he was looking for some support on that side of the box but didn't find any.

2:07 pm- The Polar Bears have been doing a great job keeping the ball in JCU territory; if the Blue Streaks want to score, they are going to have to move the ball towards the other end.

2:12 pm - Looks like JCU has taken some of my advice, they have been keeping the ball down near the ONU goalkeeper a lot these past few minutes. The Blue Streaks are getting dangerously close - Jeff Kosek just tried to pass to Scott McKinney in the box, but its deflected and no shot taken.

2:14 pm - ONU's Nate Bascom looked to be on a breakaway headed right toward goalkeeper Matt DeMarchi, but the senior leadership of Mike Pinter kept the ball away from the goal.

2:16 pm - Another close play for the Blue Streaks. Joe Ciacchi headed the ball right past the goal, barely missing the net!

2:18 pm - JCU continues to get closer and closer to scoring. Jeff Kosek just took a shot from the far right side that went off the crossbar. The Blue Streaks need to keep this up - they haven't lost at home yet this season, and do not want to break that streak starting today. Less than 27 minutes remain in the first half.

2:21 pm - Matt DeMarchi just made an unbelievable save, jumping high in the air and punching the ball above the net to prevent the second ONU goal - this is certainly a close one.

2:24 pm - Another close call for JCU, as DeMarchi makes another good save. Chaz McCullah's shot after the throw in was saved by a diving catch on the turf, around the 24th minute.

2:27 pm - The Polar Bears continue to knock on JCU's door. Freshman Cory Dobkins took a shot that went just far right, after a bunch of back and forth passes between JCU and ONU took place inside the goal box. The defense will need to pick up to help JCU out.

2:28 pm - JCU's Corey Rider gets a shot off, the first for JCU in several minutes. Unfortunately for Rider, Aaron Collins was right there to make the save.

2:31 pm - Antonio Biasiotta has a great throw-in right in front of the ONU goal, but no goal again for JCU. Just a few seconds later, ONU brings the ball down the field, and Huelsman takes another great shot on DeMarchi - this time a great block by DeMarchi, and JCU gets the ball back once again.

2:35 pm - Lots of fouls being called so far today. JCU has had a lot of substitutions, with current goal leader Scott McKinney sitting on the bench. Hopefully he will be coming in again soon.

2:38 pm - The intensity of this game continues to rise with ten minutes left. Ryan Ricart just dribbled the ball through a series of ONU defenders, then passed it off to Corey Rider. Rider had a great shot on goal, but a Polar Bear defender came almost out of no where to make the save.

2:39 pm - ONU scores again, with a sleek pass right through the middle of the JCU defense. With nine minutes left, JCU is losing 2 -0.

2:42 pm - JCU's Andrew Furlong, appearing in only his third game of the season, takes a great shot on Collins. Unfortunately for Furlong, Collins makes the catch right in the gut, to make the save.

2:44 pm - Blue Streak goal!!! Freshman Corey Rider, appearing in his first OAC play off game, take a great shot from about 20 yards out to put the ball right into the back of the net. Andrew Furlong had the clean pass up the middle to make the goal possible. With less than four minutes remaining, JCU is behind, 2-1.

2:47 pm - JCU has about two minutes to score before the end of the first half. But at Shula Stadium, nothing is out of the realm of possibilities!

2:48 pm - Antonio Biasiotta fires a 30-yard shot, but Collins is there to make the save. Less than one minute remains in the first half.

2:49 pm - A corner kick, followed by an offsides call on Ohio Northern ends the first half, with JCU trailing the Polar Bears 2-1.

2:55 pm - Halftime in University Heights is almost over, and the Blue Streaks and Polar Bears are getting ready to kick off once again. So far, ONU's Dustin Conner and Adam Ross have scored one goal each, while JCU's lone goal was scored by Corey Rider.

3:02 pm - The Polar Bears waste no time taking shots, including one 15 seconds into the game. DeMarchi makes the save, stopping another potential goal. A mere minute later, DeMarchi has another similar stop, only this time the ball gets away from him for a minute, before he can complete the save.

3:05 pm - I'm willing to bet JCU goalkeeper Matt DeMarchi is going to be pretty tired after this game today. Yet again, DeMarchi makes a diving catch to prevent an ONU goal.

3:08 pm - ONU certainly has a height advantage on the Blue Streaks. Joe Ciacchi was called for a foul that involved some contact with ONU's Dustin Conner. Ciacchi is listed as 5-6; Conner is listed at 6-4.

3:12 pm - Since the opening shot by the Polar Bears, both JCU and ONU do not seem to be playing with the same intensity of the first half. JCU will need to pick it up in order to get their second goal of the game.

3:13 pm - David Hickey, a JCU sophomore who did not play in the first half, dribbled to about the 15 yard line, and took a beautiful shot. Unfortunately for the Blue Streaks, the shot went wide left.

3:18 pm - JCU's Andrew Furlong draws the first yellow card of the game. ONU takes the free kick, and gets it into the JCU goalbox, but the Blue Streak defense gets it out quickly.

3:20 pm - Fouls can make or break games, and the JCU bench feels as though one foul that was not called is a big deal. David Hickey appeared to be tripped up inside the ONU box, missing the pass from a JCU teammate. But the game goes on, and JCU will just have to find more opportunities to score.

3:24 pm - After Pinter turned the ball over for the Blue Streaks, a dangerous moment occurred for JCU with ONU having several opportunities to push their lead to two. But the Blue Streaks can breathe a sigh of relief - the Polar Bear shot went up and over the goal.

3:27 pm - Huelsman takes the corner kick, and places a perfect shot in front of the goal. DeMarchi grabbed the ball, is bumped and loses it, but grabs it quickly so ONU again cannot score.

3:28 pm - Right now JCU does not look too happy, as the Blue Streaks have allowed ONU to score its third goal of the season with 17:57 remaining. Nate Bascom scored the goal.

3:31 pm - ONU is on a scoring streak, again finding the net at the 17:04 mark. Looks like goal leader Christian Huelsman scores this one for the Polar Bears. ONU now leads 4-1.

3:36 pm - With 12 minutes left, ONU's Adam Ross just scored his team's fifth goal of the game, giving JCU a 5-1 deficit to overcome.

3:41 pm - A change in goalkeepers has occurred for Ohio Northern, with Mike Giradot coming in for Aaron Collins.

3:44 pm - Lots of subsititutions happening for both teams, as JCU has taken out starting goalkeeper, Matt DeMarchi. About 5:50 remains in this game.

3:50 p.m.- John Carroll closes out the regular season with a 4-0 victory over the Muskies.

3:48 p.m.- The seniors on the field have been replaced for their last game in Shula Stadium.

3:44 p.m.- McNicholas feeds the ball to Korb. Korb punched it in with 5:28 left in the game for the fourth goal for the Blue Streaks.

3:42 p.m.- Grzegorzweski takes a shot but too high.

3:35 p.m.- McNicholas sent a ball across goal to Wilson, and then Val Korb got a foot on it for a shot, however Tarrance saved it.

3:25 p.m.- Lauren Grzegorzewski played a beautiful ball toward the goal and Erika Eberhardt played the bounce ending in a goal for the Blue Streaks. With under 25 minutes left in the second half the Blue Streaks now lead with a score of 3-0.

3:24 p.m.- McNicholas and Wilson both work together to try and get a goal however Tarrance stops it.

3:19 p.m.- Walton takes a corner kick to Clare Wellott. Wellott sends it back to Walton. Walton shoots but stopped by Tarrance.

3:13 p.m.- Lauren Wilson sends a shot across goal to Betsy Haigh but shot it too far left.

3:08 p.m.- McNicholas takes a shot but stopped by Tarrance.

3:05 p.m.- Walton takes a shot on the Muskingum goal, too high.

8:40 pm - Marietta's playoff hopes are dissolving before our very eyes. While they remained competative throughout the first three games, they lose the final three. JCU wins 25-13.

8:38 pm - Great cognizance from McDiarmid as she drops an ace in front of the deep Marietta defense. JCU leads 18-10.

8:31 pm - Game 3 stats: Hitting percentages largely improved for both squads: John Carroll at a .364 clip and Marietta at .333. Errors that were abundant in the first game were nearly gone in the third game, only three. Gambone led with 5 kills, followed by 3 for Kidd. Kidd had two aces. Both players accounted for 10 of John Carroll's 25 points.

8:26 pm - This is the first game in which John Carroll has held a significant lead early on. A 4-1 lead illicits a timeout from Marietta Coach Ray Costa.

8:22 pm - John Carroll wins the third game 25-22

8:18 pm - McDiarmid is whistled for a net violation. The Marietta point ties the score at 21 before two quick points by JCU. 23-21 John Carroll

8:12 pm - The dogfight continues. This time, the southpaw setter Meredith McDiarmid finds a soft spot in the defense. Marietta won't go down without a fight, in fact, they quietly have the lead.

8:09 pm - Another lethal spike from Gambone gives JCU a 12-9 lead. A far cry from the 7-1 deficit they had to overcome in the first game.

8:06 pm - Kristen Kidd is firing spikes to the floor. The dangerous combination of Kidd and senior Megan Gambone has Marietta on their heels.

7:58 pm - John Carroll takes the second game by an identical score of 25-21. Senior Katie Hastings had a big block to give JCU the first point after a Marietta timeout.

7:54 pm - We officially have a nailbiter. An inevitable kill is countered by a spectacular dig or a huge block. This game is going down to the wire. John Carroll leads 22-21 but there is no telling where this one may end up.

7:51 pm - Once again, a timout works wonders for John Carroll who now trails their opponent by only one: 17-16.

7:47 pm - After being 0n or around a tie game through the first 25 points of game 2, Marietta begins to widen the gap. By virture of tremendous digs and uncanny blocks, the Pioneers are able to possess a 17-13 lead.

7:40 pm - Game one stats of note: Marietta had 6 blocks, Jessie Blackley factored in on 4 (2 solo, 2 assists). JCU possessed a dismal hitting percentage of -.071. Registering only 8 kills and 11 errors.

One can sense the enthusiasm gap between John Carroll and Marietta. The despiration of the Pioneers is palpable, but they are having fun.

7:33 pm - Timeouts can work wonders. Marietta rattled off 2 subsequent points to take the first game by a score of 25-21. John Carroll escaped humiliation with a strong showing late in the game.

7:10 pm - Lights, camera, action! The players have been announced and we are seconds away from competition. Motivation is high for this despirate Marietta squad, a loss would eliminate the Pioneers from playoff contention.

8:00 pm - JCU wins the race as Melissa Fillmore edges Kacie Otting in the women's 100 breast, 1:11.59 to 1:11.89.

7:50 pm - Nick Grady notches win number two in the men's 500 Free. His mark of 5:32.23 edges Wilmington's Kenny Holter at 5:33.57 to give JCU a 124-44. Like the women's meet, the men will go exhibition from here on out.

7:44 pm - JCU's Heidi Benson will sleep well tonight, as she follows her 1000 Free victory from earlier in the evening to win the 500 Free in 5:31.12. Melissa Fillmore, yet another freshman doing well tonight, claims second in 5:47.71. JCU will claim its final points of the night, and lead 123-42. Head coach Matt Lenhart will elect to go exhibition the rest of the way, meaning he will no longer be swimming for team points.

7:40 pm - Steve Cingle's first collegiate win is in the men's 100 back. Swimming in lane five, he pulls off a winning time of 1:01.10. Blake Pinchot touches in second at 1:02.02. The Blue Streaks are now up on the Quakers, 110-39.

7:38 pm - Samantha Mossman was part of a winning relay to start the night, now she hets an individual win in the women's 100 back. She swims a 1:04.58, with teammate Andrea Kovacs pulling in at 1:07.52 for second place. JCU has reached the hundreds, winning by a108-38 score.

7:36 pm - Nick Grady and Max Wilberding dominate in the men's 100 free. Grady wins in 51.47, Wilberding is next in 52.42. JCU closing this one out, 96-34.

7:34 pm - Two-time OAC Swimmer of the Year Heather Gilmour wins her first individual event of 2008-09, claiming first in the women's 100 free. Her time of 58.58 is just ahead of fellow Blue Streak senior Liana Sved (59.12). John Carroll 93, Wilmington 34.

7:32 pm - The Blue Streaks remain undefeated thanks to an Eric Davis first place swim in the men's 100 fly. He wins with a time of 55.74, almost four seconds ahead of the Quakers John Creech (59.50). JCU is now ahead by an 81-30 count.

7:30 pm - After a break, John Carroll picks up the 1-2 parade by sweeping the top two spots in the women's 100 fly. Katie mathews wins this race in 1:02.48, while Brittany Krauth continues a strong debut with her time of 1:03.88. The score is now John Carroll 80, Wilmington 28.

7:21 pm - Alex Vereschchagin wins one of the better races of the evening. Virtually tied after five length, he pulls away from Wilmington's Dustin Anderson to win the 200 IM in a time of 2:12.03. Anderson touches in 2;16.24, but JCU increases the lead to 69-24.

7:19 pm - Two freshman women take center stage for JCU in the 200 IM. Brittany Krauth wins in 2:22.62, while Samantha Mossman touches second in 2:23.96. John Carroll now leads, 65-25.

7:17 pm - David Perchinske and Tony Russo lead yet another first and second place dominance in the men's 50 Free. In increasing the lead to 56-18 over Wilmington, Perchinske swims a time of 23.77, and Russo is close behind at 24.12.

7:15 pm - Andrea Kovacs and Heather Gilmour go 1-2 in the women's 50 Free. Kovacs goes to the wall in 26.40, while gilmour is an fingetip behind in 26.59. John Carroll has now built a 50-21 advantage.

7:12 pm - In his JCU debut, Eric Davis win the men's 200 Free in a big way. His time of 1:53.31 is enough to win the race by more than six seconds. He was followed to the wall by teammate and fellow rookie Blake Pinchot (1:59.75). Streaks pull ahead 43-12.

7:11 pm - JCU goes 1-2 again, this time in the women's 200 Free. Katie Mathews wins in 2:05.72, while Liana Sved is next in 2:08.24. The Blue Streaks hold a 37-15 advantage.

7:10 pm - Okay, let's get you caught up. In the men's 1000 Free, Ryan Tipping rolled to a win with a time of 11:36.34. Tom Barden made it a 1-2 finish with his runner-up mark of 11:46.63. JCU ahead 29-7.

6:36 pm - Heidi Benson picks up where she left off with a convincing win in the 1000 Free. The JCU sophomore wins in 11:08.63, almost a full two minutes ahead of the second place finisher, Brittany Mozingo of Wilmington (13:02.60). JCU leads 23-10.

6:20 pm - Issues resolved, the JCU men went 1-2 in the 200 medley. First place time was 1:46.38 turned in by Pinchot, Valigosky, Davis and Perchinske. JCU men lead 15-2 right off the bat.

6:15 pm - The JCU women won the first race of the night, the 200 medley relay. The Blue Streak quartet of Mossman, Fillmore, Mathews and Gilmour won in 1:55.78, defeating Wilmington's effort of 1:59.86. JCU women up 11-4. However, technical difficulties (computer froze) has us in a delay

5:01 pm - Caitlyn Walton pulls a slick move on a defender then sends a rocket from 20 yards out for the first goal of the afternoon. John Carroll leads 1-0 with 41 minutes left in the 2nd half.

4:28 pm - Lauren Sweeney makes a stellar save on a shot by Caitlyn Walton after Sweeney tackled a John Carroll atacker. Sweeney blocked the initial shot then saved the rebound in quite a show of talent.

4:24 pm - The sun has come out at Don Shula stadium as the Blue Streaks continue to be the aggressor barely missing on several more attempts. The score remains 0-0 with 20 mintes left in the 1st half.

7:11 pm - Blue Streaks having trouble setting up their offense leading to much helter skelter and a 4-7 deficit.

7:02 pm - Just finished an astounding rendition of the national anthem by John Carroll student Emily Hope. Teams are on their respective foul lines.

6:58 pm - About one minute away from the national anthem. Both teams have retreated to their respecive benches. John Carroll now in dark blue jerseys with white numbers. Capital in white jerseys and black numbers.

1:52 pm - Great day for soccer at Shula Stadium. Sun is out in full force, slight breeze, temps in the 70's. What more can you ask for?

2 pm - JCU and Marietta are about to kick off, with both teams listening to the National Anthem - it doesn't get any better than this in America!

2:14 p.m. - Sorry for the delay in posts, but this game has been action-packed! Within about a 90-second stretch, JCU and Marietta scored three goals, with the Blue Streaks now leading 2-1. We'll see if these two teams will settle down, or if this scoring will be a trend throughout the game.

2:22 p.m. - No big plays, but JCU needs to figure out a way to handle the speed of Marietta's McDonald and Muth. JCU's McKinney has had several close attempts for a score, but has yet to hit the net.

2:30 p.m. - Great play by JCU with a corner kick. Ciacchi takes the kick, and passes it perfectly to McKinney who gives it right to the feet of Kosek. Unfortunately for JCU, Marietta goalkeeper Steven Hagenau was prepared, and made a huge save.

2:39 p.m. - Louis Kastelic had a great pass inside the box, and Jake Milli made a great effort to head it in - but the ball went wide right. With less than 8 minutes to play, JCU still leads just 2-1.

3:02 p.m. - We're back from halftime, and the score has not changed in the first few minutes of play. JCU's leading scorer Jeff Kosek hasn't been a big playmaker so far today, so we'll see if in the second half he can do something to extend the JCU lead.

3:12 p.m. - Things have gotten more interesting here at Shula Stadium. Senior defender Mike Pinter received his second card of the game, resulting in a red card that has removed him from the game. This set up a penalty kick right outside of the box, allowing Marietta's Dele Adedapo to score and tie the game 2-2. JCU will now play one man down for the remainder of the game. 32 minutes remain. Look soon for more updates!

3:32 p.m. - No change in the score, but both the Pioneers and the Blue Streaks have had some close shots on the goal. Right now time is stopped for an injury on the field, but the player, Jake Milli is up and walking around, and appears to be ok.

3:36 p.m. - Scott McKinney has just shown why you always hustle. Marietta passed the ball back to its goalkeeper, Hagenau, but he was not expecting the kick. McKinney noticed the miscue, and got to the ball for the JCU goal! Now with 11 minutes remaining, JCU leads, 3-2. We'll see if JCU can hold on with a 10-man set on the field.

3:48 p.m. - JCU still leads, 3-2 with less than three minutes remaining. Marietta just headed a ball into the goal! But offsides is called, and the goal is no good. What a game here at Shula Stadium today! We have seen some pretty crazy stuff, and it's not over yet.

3:56 p.m. - The Blue Streaks pull off the win, keeping the Pioneers at bay and having a final score 3-2.

8:52 - Less than one minute. Less than one minute remaining ...

8:50 - 3:30 ... and counting!

8:46 - 7:45 left in the second half as the tickets seem to take forever to tick off. Wooster is throwing everything at the Blue Streaks, but Zrebiec and her defense have turned away every shot.

8:43 - Wooster has controlled the ball, but they have been unable to have any legitimate scoring chances recently. Perhaps all that intensity they used attacking may have them a bit fatigued as we reach the 10:00 mark here in the second half.

8:36 - We have passed the 17:00 minute mark here inside water-logged Shula Stadium. The Blue Streaks still desperately holding on for dear life to their 1-0 lead.

8:33 - A Wooster pass deep n JCU territory looked to have some merit to it. However, the referee ruled that JCU goalie Michelle Zrebiec was interfered with - ending any of Wooster's scoring hopes.

8:28 - A Wooster shot goes past a diving Zrebiec to the far post. A second Wooster shot at what appeared to be an empty net went over the soccer goal and through the football uprights. JCU 1, Wooster 0. 24:00 left.

8:26 - Wooster is really dominating the tempo of play here as the ball has typically been deep in Blue Streak territory. Zrebiec has come up big time after time.

8:24 - With the score still at 1-0 and just under 30 minutes left, the Blue Streaks again go to the bench to bring in subs. Eckman and Haigh return.

8:21 - Wooster has a great centering pass right in front of the box but a fantastic hustle play by Brynn McNicholas stalls the efforts. McNicholas added a burst of speed and took the ball into the offensive end.

8:15 - Zrebiec made a save in the air, all while being collided in the air by a Wooster player. No penalty called. Immediately thereafter, Wooster takes another shot on goal. The Scots shot is a foot high, clanking off the football goal post immediately behind the goal. Wooster is really picking up the intensity.

8:14 - With 40:25 left, the fourth time is the charm! Rachel Grdina picks up a Katie Porta corner kick and scoops it into the goal for the first score of the game. Grdina's goal makes the score JCU 1, Wooster 0. Assist to Katie Porta.

8:13 - Just as they did to start the first half, the Blue Streaks have kept the ball deep in Wooster territory to start the half. The Blue Streaks just missed on their third corner kick of the game.

8:10 - Wooster has the ball in front of a rather empty JCU goal. Brianna McDeavitt saves the day for JCU, heading the ball out of danger.

8:08 - Were back underway here at Shula Stadium. The skies are clear ... for now. A chill is definitely in the air. This weather makes one pray that this contest doesn't reach overtime as it did in 2007 when these two teams met.

7:50 - We've played one here at Shula Stadium. No score. It looks like on this night with these weather conditions, one goal may be all it takes.

7:46: The Blue Streaks dodge a huge level as one of the new Scots that just entered the game takes the ball deep into JCU territory. Again, Zrebiec comes up with the save. 3:30 left - no score.

7:44 - Subs. JCU brings in Val Korb, and the Scots bring in five fresh players off the bench.

7:42 - Wooster takes their first shot on goal - perhaps on the night - and the ball takes a funny, rain-aided hop on Michelle Zrebiec. Still, the Blue Streaks superb senior goalie comes up with the stop.

7:37 - We have our first subs of the game as Kasey Eckman, Eleanor Sovacool, Betsy Haigh, and Lauren Wilson enter the game.

7:33 - Rain has returned! You can see it impact the game as Rachel Grdina slips while dribbling the ball deep in the Wooster end.

7:29 - Were past the halfway mark here in the first half and no score from Shula Stadium. 21:30 left in the first half.

7:27- Colleen Harmon steals the ball deep in Wooster territory. Harmon was unselfish, perhaps to a fault on that play, as she tried to set up a teammate instead of taking her own shot, which looked to be a better scoring chance.

7:24 - We can see the weather impacting this game. Aside from players losing their football, the ball has skipped a few times here already.

7:20 - A Daigler-Harmon-Daigler give-and-go gives the Blue Streaks a legitimate scoring shot. Daigler has a nice angle, but missed by about a yard to the top right corner. The rain subsided ... for now.

7:19 - Scots goaltender Hoffman misplayed a JCU shot and let the ball go out of bounds. A Blue Streaks corner kick results in nothing, but the ball is typically staying deep in Scots territory. JCU has dominated play for most of the time so far.

7:17 - We said to wait five minutes on the weather ... and we were right. Rain dropping by the buckets here at Shula Stadium.

7:16 - JCU with a free kick. Queeneville elects to pass to a teammate. After the ball is passed around, the Blue Streaks had a decent scoring opportunity until Rachel Grdina was stripped of the ball.

7:13 - Wooster goaltender Alex Hoffman tries to clear the ball but Blue Streaks freshman Colleen Harmon sneaks into the path of the ball and ricochets the ball out of bounds. Great play by the freshman. Her sneak attack almost resulted in an easy Blue Streaks scoring opportunity.

7:10 - Blue Streaks with the possession in Wooster territory and Wooster having trouble clearing the ball and escaping the danger. However, the Blue Streaks attempted 0 shots on goal.

7:05 - Were under way.

7:00 - The starting lineups have been announced and were just moments away from getting under way here from Shula Stadium. Missing tonight due to injury is JCU leading scorer Caitlyn Walton as well as Katie Weppner. JCU enters tonight 6-1-2, Wooster is currently 8-1.

6:55 - The rains have given way and we actually have partially clear skies to start our game. but, hey, this is Cleveland. Wait five minutes ...

4:35 pm: Final statistics show that this game was tight all the way through. Mark Petruziello led the way offensively for the Blue Streaks. He rushed for 78 yards with a touchdown run and was 17-23 with 186 yards and a touchdown. Both Frank Ross and Rebere Sparks (pictured left, scoring his touchdown) had 6 receptions for 65 and 61 yards respectively. For Heidelberg, Kenny Sims rushed for 76 yards on 16 carries. Andrew Miller was 18-29 for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Lucas Bauer and Dawond Roddy both had touchdown receptions. Total offensive yards for John Carroll and Heidelberg was 281 and 302 respectively.

Once again, just to make sure its pounded into your head :), the final score is John Carroll over Heidelberg 17-15.

4:27 pm: The John Carroll offense will kneel down and eat up the clock and John Carroll WINS! After a long and competitive battle, John Carroll comes out on top, 17-15! The Blue Streaks improve to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. Heidelberg drops to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.

4:26 pm: Mark Petruziello rushes up the middle for a few yards and Heidelberg calls a timeout. 50.8 seconds remain.

4:22 pm: The fourth quarter is winding down, 1:32 remains. Facemask penalty is called on Heidelberg moving the ball all the way up to the Berg 49 yard line. Big penalty and may cost Heidelberg a chance to get decent field position IF they get the ball back.

4:21 pm: Petruziello is rushed out of the pocket and is forced to throw the ball away. John Carroll now is in a 3rd and long nine. If the Berg can hold them here, they may have a chance at this game.....Petruziello completes a pass to Frank Ross for a very important first down. John Carroll is going to try and milk the clock now.

4:19 pm: Jeffrey Javorek takes the kickoff return as the Berg elected to kick it deep in hopes that their defense will stop the Blue Streaks from getting those all important first downs.

4:17 pm: HEIDELBERG TOUCHDOWN! Miller finds Bauer in the back of the endzone! The 2 point try is NO GOOD! Miller attempted to keep the ball and rush to the far corner of the endzone but he is stopped just short by Mileskiewicz and Bevington! John Carroll leads 17-15 with 3:13 left in the fourth quarter.

4:15 pm: Heidelberg calls a time out to relax and debate amongst each other as to what John carrolls mascot really is...we may never know...A wolf? A dingo? Maybe a rabid dog?

4:14 pm: Miller finds Bauer right at the first down marker and Heidelberg continues to show signs of life. 4:06 remains in the fourth quarter. Even if the Berg does score here, they will be hard pressed to tie the game or take the lead.

4:12 pm: 3rd and ten for the Berg as Miller had an open Tyson at the Carroll 5 yard line but threw over his head. If the Blue Streaks can stop them here and on fourth, the game will be decided in John Carroll's favor.

4:10 pm: John Carroll has forced the Berg into a 3rd and eleven on the John Carroll 33 yard line. This could be the ball game for Heidelberg. Miller dances around in the pocket and finds a wide open Lucas Bauer for the first down.

4:07 pm: The refs are trying to short us! Sims had the rush up the gut but the whistle blew and his forward progress stopped. Just as the whistle blew Sims fumbled but the play was called dead. Whats up with that?

4:05 pm: Miller just got all shook up as Iheama crushed the QB as he was throwing the ball away. Miller, however, fights back after the vicious hit and finds Preston for the first down. Its 1st and 10 on the John Carroll 43 yard line with 8:16 left.

4:03 pm: The weather is starting to look rather shady if I do say so myself. Its getting cloudy and it looks as though it may rain and THUNDAAAA. Mother nature obviously HATES football.

4:02 pm: There is 10:56 remaining in the fourth quarter and the Berg does have the ball. As John Carroll fans, we can only hope that Miller gift wraps us a few interceptions.

4:00 pm: You know its the fourth quarter here at Shula Stadium when the wrestling team is trying to sell those hot dogs for a buck. However, wrester and friend, Mike Nijoka, is probably eating many hot dogs to drown his sorrow away as his dream of becoming Homecoming King was shattered earlier by the dreamy Peter Niro.

3:58 pm: Petruziello completes his pass to Frank Ross for another first down. The ball is on the 45 yard line of the Berg. Petruziello tries to go deep to Scottie Williams but perfect coverage is applied and the pass is incomplete. I bet Tony Romo could have made that pass.

3:57 pm: The blog master (myself) just got some statistics. Mark Petruziello is beating the Berg with both his arm and legs. He leads the team in rushing with 68 yards and a rushing touchdown and is 13-16 for 130 yards and a touchdown pass. Rebere Sparks is running all over the field hauling in 5 receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown. Heidelbergs offense has been rather inept, to say the least. Kenny Sims has rushed for 65 yards and Andrew Miller has thrown for 122 yards with a lone touchdown pass to Dawond Roddy.

3:53 pm: 1o seconds left in the third quarter giving John Carroll one more play... and the Blue Streaks will just run out the clock. After three quarters the score is 17-9 in favor of your JOHN CARROLL BLUE STREAKS!

3:50 pm: John Carrolls defense is looking a lot better here in the second half. Ken Bevington is back on the field causing havoc as always. The Berg finds themselves in a 3rd and long situation. Millers pass is incomplete, intended for Tyson, and Heidelberg is forced to punt....again. VERY NICE!

3:48 pm: Adrian Balser took the kickoff and as the Sunday Countdown crew always say...HE GOT JACKED UP. Josh Rentz laid out Balser and made him wish he took up track & field rather than football.

3:46 pm: TOUCHDOWN JOHN CARROLL BLUE STREAKS. Mark Petruziello finds a wide open Rebere Sparks for the score. With Kedziors extra poing John Carroll extends their lead, 17-9, with 2:34 in the third quarter. Its Petruziello's first touchdown pass of the game!

3:44 pm: Petruziello hooks up with Rebere Sparks on a big gain and then on the next play rushes up the gut for a big pickup on the ground. 1st and 10 on the Berg 22 yard line. 4:06 left in the third quarter.

3:41 pm: Just a quick update, Sports Information Director, Chris Wenzler is going bald as we speak. The man is pulling out his hair trying to get the live stats to work on the web but his tireless efforts are to no avail. This blog is now your official play by play! NICE!

3:40 pm: Two straight plays and no yards gained for the Heidelberg. The ball can't get much further on the field without crossing the goal line. I'm suprised we haven't seen a run straight up the gut...and on third down, Sims is taken down behind the line of scrimmage for a loss. John Carroll forces the Berg to kick a field goal. Jesse Hawkins field goal is good and the Berg cuts into John Carrolls lead, 10-9.

3:38 pm: The Berg is trying to punch it in the endzone. Lewis runs right up the gut and is stopped on the 1 yard line. 1st and goal for Miller and crew to take the lead for a second time today. 6:23 remaining in the third quarter.

3:36 pm: Miller and the Berg offense is moving the football as Miller and wide receiver Mike Preston hook up and get another first down. John Carroll's defense is looking tired and apathetic.
3:35 pm: Jemar Lewis with a big run! First down at the John Carroll 48 yard line.

3:34 pm: Heidelberg moving backwards with penalties. Millers pass to Bower is incomplete but it looked as though it could have been called a fumble. None the less, its 2nd and 15 on the 29 yard line.

3:32 pm: Petruziellos pass to Spachner isn't enough for the first down and John Carroll will serve up a punt and Heidelberg will gladly accept. Bower fumbles the punt return but is able to jump back on the ball. The first few minutes of this third quarter have been extremely sloppy. At least our kicking game is solid today....... if you excuse that first missed field goal....

3:29 pm: Two runs by Petruziello gives the Blue Streaks a first down on the 13 yard line. Petruziello hurting the Berg with his legs on this drive.

3:26 pm: John Carroll holds tight on the defensive and forces the Berg to punt as Sims had three carries to get 10 yards but couldn't do it. Heidelbergs punt forces John Carroll to begin their drive on the 1 yard line!

3:25 pm: Heidelberg takes over on the 40 yard line after a great return. John Carroll remains on top 10-6. Sims gets the first two carries of the half and John Carroll forces a 3rd and five situation.

3:23 pm: We are almost underway here for the second half of the football match between your Blue Streaks and the Berg of Heidelberg!

3:17 pm: During the half John Carroll recognized some of its most famous athletes. This years 2008 Hall of Fame Induction Class includes Chris Connelly (wrestling, class of 1994), Doug Dickason (football and baseball, class of 1988), Kim MacDougall Moore (swimming, class of 1990), Matt Lemieux (track & field, class of 1998), Carrie McVicker (softball, class of 1998), the 1974-75 John Carroll wrestling squad, and last but certainly not least, London Fletcher (football, class of 1998). London currently is with the Washington Redskins of the National Football league. He has also spent time with the St. Louis Rams and the Buffalo Bills. He won a Superbowl championship with the Rams!

3:03 pm: The clock winds down and the first half is complete and in the books. The score is 10-6 in favor of your John Carroll Blue Streaks. However, it has not been pretty. There have been fumbles, dropped passes, and many punts. But hey, a lead is a lead! Be back shortly for the beginning of the second half!

3:00 pm: Kenny Sims drops an easy ball which would have given the Berg a first down. Kenny had those buttaaa fingers. Heidelberg is forced to punt....there have been so many punts the past few minutes that I lost count...

2:58 pm: The Blue Streaks once again can't get the offense in sync. 4th and three as John Carroll sets up to punt. The ball is fair caught at the Heidelberg 47 yard line. The Berg will try and take the lead before half, 37 seconds remain in the second quarter.

2:56 pm: John Carroll forces Heidelberg to punt as Miller couldn't find an open receiver on 3rd down. Petruziello will try and lead the Blue Streaks to a score before the half....fair catch is made by Frank Ross and John Carroll will take over on the 12 yard line.

2:53 pm: Heidelberg still has control offensively trying to get another score before the half. 2nd and 14 currently on the 50 yard line.

2:52 pm: Just a friendly reminder...the Blue Streaks mascot is....a dingo?

2:51 pm: Heidelberg takes its first timeout. The score is 10-6 in favor of John Carroll with 3:46 remaining in the second quarter.

2:49 pm: Kenny Sims isn't doing much on the ground for the Berg but Miller is maintaining his composure in the pocket making some nice plays both throwing and scrambling when needed. The Berg is in a 3rd and three situation.

2:48 pm: John Carrolls defense is playing tough trying to force the Berg into a three and out situation.

2:44 pm: JOHN CARROLL TOUCHDOWN. MARKY MARK PETRUZIELLO QB KEEPER. Kedziors kick is good. John Carroll takes the lead 10-6! 7:31 remaining in the second quarter.

2:42 pm: What a turn of events! Heidelberg fumbled on the punt return. Matt Harmon forced the fumble and Luke Whitworth picks up the loose change. John Carroll now has a chance to take the lead for the first time. The ball is on the 8 yard line.

2:41 pm: Another sack for the Berg defense. Petruziello is running for his life this afternoon. He's not getting any time in the pocket to make throws and John Carroll is now forced to punt.

2:39 pm: Wow...Petruziello shows off that arm and hooks up with Frank Ross for a HUGE gain giving the Blue Streaks the first down in Berg territory, the 48 yard line.

2:37 pm: Petruziello gets sacked on 1st down. Seemed to be a coverage sack as Petruziello had nowhere to throw the ball. 2nd and 16 on John Carrolls 36 and Petruziello is sacked again!? So just like that a 1st and 10 now becomes a 3rd and 27.

2:36 pm: Another quick update, Mark Elsaesser is on the sideline. The running back has had a great game thus far so we hope to see him back on the field.

2:34 pm: JOHN CARROLL FIRST DOWN! 1st and 10 on the 24 yard line, John Carroll driving.

2:33 pm: Petruziello and the rest of the Blue Streak offense seems to be struggling in the early going here at home. 3rd and one deep in John Carroll territory.

2:30 pm: John Carroll is playing some strong defense on this Heidelberg drive. Millers pass is almost intercepted by Joe Cigas on third down. John Carroll will get the ball back on a punt and the first quarter has officially ended. So after 15:00 minutes of play, the score is 6-3 in favor of the Berg.

2:26 pm: Once again, the Blue Streaks can't get it done in the red zone. Heidelberg is giving John Carroll a lot to work with in the middle of the field but they buckle down when the Blue Streaks get into the red zone. Kedzior connects on the field goal and John Carroll cuts into the lead, 6-3.

2:23 pm: Flag on the pass from Petruziello to Spachner. A unsportsman like conduct penalty on Vaughn Klein will give the Blue Streaks the ball on the 10 yard line!

2:20 pm: Mark Elsaesser with two big runs! Two quick first downs for the Blue Streaks in Heidelberg territory, 1st and 10 on the 35 yard line.

2:18 pm: HEIDELBERG SCORES! A connection between Miller and Dawond Roddy gives the Berg the score. The extra point is no good...what a shame...The score is now 6-0 the Berg with 4:41 remaining in the first quarter.

2:18 pm: A little update, Kenny Bevington is on the sidelines for the Blue Streaks. Hopefully its nothing serious and he will be back on the field...the defense just isn't the same without him!

2:16 pm: Miller picks up a gain of 8 and another first down for the Berg. It seems as though Heidelberg is just having their way offensively on the first drive. The Berg is in John Carroll territory, 32 yard line with 6:07 left in the first quarter.

2:13 pm: 2nd and three for the berg, Miller completes a pass to Greg Tyson for a first down.

2:11 pm: Andrew Miller, the Berg QB, is sacked on first down! Chukubueze Iheama gets the sack and on second down Sims fumbles but regains control of the ball! However, to John Carrolls dismay, on third down Miller finds an open receiver and completes a pass for the first down.

2:08 pm: John Carroll stumbles in the red zone and the attempted field goal is NO GOOD!?!?!?!?!?! The game remains 0-0 as Kedzior had his kick blocked by a finger tip!

2:03 pm: Mark Petruziello and Mark Elsaesser are both off to hot starts as John Carroll is already in Berg terrority. The ball is on the 16 yard line, 2nd and 6.

2:01 pm: Heidelberg is off to a great start...for us! Facemask penalty right off the bat for the Berg.

2:00 pm: And we are about to begin the game. John Carroll wins the coin toss and elects to receive!

1:58 pm: As much fun is the homecoming King and Queen crowning, the moment that you have all been waiting for is the great matchup between your Blue Streaks and the Berg of Heidelberg. Both teams enter todays game at 1-1 overall and both 0-1 in the OAC. Both teams are looking to start their own winning streak in OAC play. Besides, we want someone else to be on top in the OAC other than Mount Union. Enough is enough!

1:55 pm: And the moment has finally arrived...Your John Carroll Homecoming King and Queen are PETER NIRO and JENNY EDEN. Just a little background on these two great kids, Peter is an accomplished musician/singer and a member of the Beta fraternity and Miss Eden is also a guitarist an a very good softball player here at JCU. In fact, Peter has put out a cd that you can find in the quaint little bookstore here at JCU. We can only hope for a duet between these two excellent musicians!

1:40 pm: The homecoming court is now appearing on the far side of the field. A traditional activity for homecoming, the homecoming Queen and King crowning is by far one of the most exciting events. Its also been said that two of the King candidates will wrestle for their crown, Michael Nijoka and AJ Sturniolo. Its sure to be a fight till the end!

1:30 pm - Half hour away from homecoming kickoff at lovely Wasmer Field at Don Shula Stadium. The crowd is still hustlin' around Belvoir enjoying the sights and sounds at this years street fair. Also, the homecoming king and queen will be announced shortly!

6:00 pm: Stats for you: Shots 9-3 in favor of OWU...Offsides 3-0 in favor of OWU...Corners 3-0 in favor of OWU...Yet, the score is 0-0.

5:50 pm: Halftime arrives with the score remaining 0-0. Ohio Wesleyan had about six or seven great opportunities to put a point up. JCU had chances as well, but is having trouble getting a shot off. Stats forthcoming...

5:41 pm: Scott McKinney just had a shot go wide left...JCU has yet to truly test OWU keeper Richard Ott.

5:37 pm: Matt DeMarchi is keeping JCU in the match...just made his fourth brilliant save...this time from about five feet away with 12 minutes left in the half.

5:25 pm: The Blue Streaks send in Jeff Kosek and Scott McKinney to try to generate more shots...OWU getting the better chances over the last 12 minutes.

5:15 pm: Both teams had legitimate scoring chances in the first ten minutes... then OWU's Matt Bonfini had a breakaway that was stopped on a great dive by JCU GK Matt DeMarchi.

5:02 pm: Ohio Wesleyan is John Carroll's opponent today. 6-1 on the year... a tough foe to break a two-match losing streak against.

4:50 pm: We will have the news of the match as it happens ... but we have a bit of tragic news to pass on. Erin Thomas, a JCU grad and older sister of JCU GK Craig Thomas, passed away tragically in a car accident Thursday. There will be a moment of silence before the match.

Don't Let The Last Three Detract From The First 23

The reality of the situation involving the John Carroll women's basketball is that it endured a three-game slide that ended what had been a promising season on a sour note.

But avoid the temptation of letting the final three games of the 2007-2008 campaign detract from the first 23 games.

Or perhaps, more specifically, the middle 16.

Between December 28, 2007, and February 16, 2008, the women's basketball team at John Carroll posted a record of 13-3. That is about as good of a stretch of basketball that the Blue Streaks have played in its history.

This includes the halcyon days of the early 1990's, when the likes of Cindy Shumaker, Darlene Sheehan, Beth Arrowsmith, Michelle Bielozer and Sue Zidanic patrolled the hardwood at what was then simply known as Carroll Gym.

Roxanne Allen took over the program in 1990, and promptly built it into a contender. The Blue Streaks had the misfortune of being a very good team at a time when Capital University was a very great team in the same Ohio Athletic Conference. Those Crusaders won back-to-back national titles in years in which JCU was a combined 40-12.

Allen's departure led to some very lean years. Promisng non-conference results would eventually give in to some massive losing streaks. The rock bottom year was 1997-98, when JCU went 6-20 -- just four seasons removed from a 20-6 record.

Kristie Maravalli took over, and slowly but steadily built a respectable program. But despite the best efforts of the likes of Katie Benjamin, Meagan Heller, Katie Walsh and Shayla Bell, the Blue Streaks could never seemingly get over the hump of respectablility and into the sacred ground of contender.

2007-2008 started out in a similar way. Two wins through the first six games, followed by a third consecutive loss in conference play on December 15. But in that loss, a player stepped in named Lee Jennings that would help turn the fortunes around.

An All-Ohio player for Stow High School, Jennings had led her team to the state championship game as a senior. All set to be the crown jewel of Bowling Green State University's freshmen class, Jennings would turn down the opportunity to play scholarship basketball after just two weeks at the school.

A connection with former Stow coach Jeff Camp would lead her to John Carroll's door, and the rest, as they say, is history. It started with a tournament title at Wittenberg, and that was followed by a pair of five-game winning streaks. Included in that good fortune was a mammoth seven-game road winning streak.

Although JCU would eventually run out of gas and drop consecutive games to Baldwin-Wallace and Wilmington in the final week of the regular season, the Blue Streaks had finally become a contender. John Carroll tied preseason favorite Capital and Otterbein for fourth place in the OAC (its highest finish since 1993-94).

More importantly, John Carroll will return its entire starting five and nearly 94 percent of its scoring offense. The only two seniors on the team, Abby Baum and Molly Scholla, will be missed for their leadership, but only take 55 points out of the team's production of 1,797 with them.

It was a long and circuitous route that John Carroll took from its back-to-back 20-win seasons to reach the 15-win plateau again. With Jennings, Rachael Price, Whitney Hamilton, Erin Zahariev, Caitlin Sureck, Laura Gruber and Alex D'Amico returning as a nucleus, Maravalli could be one solid recruiting class away from -- dare we say -- making a run at the school's first ever OAC women's basketball title.

It Never Stops Being Cool

As the New England Patriots begin their journey toward Super Bowl XLII, it should be pointed out that John Carroll University -- or as sportcasters like to refer to it as TINY John Carroll University -- has made an indelible impact on the National Football League that few small colleges can claim.

The only two times that a team in the NFL has gone through an entire regular season without a loss, there was a former Blue Streak on the coaching staff who figured prominently in the achievement.

That is a fact that never stops being cool.

Following the 1971 NFL season, the Miami Dolphins made their first appearance in a Super Bowl. The young Dolphins had posted a 10-3-1 record in the franchise’s sixth year of existence, but fell hard in a 24-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl VI.

No one expected what the young team accomplished in 1972. A promising campaign seemingly was lost when starting quarterback Bob Griese went down with a broken leg during just the fifth game of the season. However, under the guidance of John Carroll graduate Don Shula, the Dolphins rallied behind journeyman Earl Morrall and posted an unprecedented 17-0 record, culminated by a 14-7 victory over the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII.

It was not until 2007 that another team was able to match the Dolphins’ feat. The New England Patriots, with John Carroll alums John McDaniels serving as offensive coordinator and Nick Caserio as the receivers coach, have put together a 16-0 regular season.

Although the playoffs and Super Bowl are still to be played as of this writing, the Patriots still have the disntiction of being only the second team ever to go through an NFL regular season unscathed.

Every time Josh McDaniels' picture pops up on television, it never stops being cool.

It is the same way when the Washington Redskins play on national television, or before that Buffalo and St. Louis. It doesn't even matter who wins or loses the game (unless you are a fan of that team). The best part of the game is when the starting line-up is allowed to introduce themselves, and they get to say their name and where they went to school.

"London Fletcher, John Carroll University"

That never stops being cool, especially when you are in a room full of people who had know idea that you and London Fletcher share an alma mater.

Even better if someone in the room is from Mount Union College.

John Carroll graduates, we can hold our heads high this NFL postseason. One of our own as an acknowledged leader of the Redskins helped his team overcome the devastating murder of a teammate to reach the playoffs. Another two grads are on the coaching staff of the 16-0 New England Patriots. And lets not forget the front office gurus/JCU graduates Chris Polian, Tom Telesco and David Caldwell , all of whom have had a hand in building the defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts.

Not bad for TINY John Carroll University.

In fact, when you get right down to it, its pretty cool.

Alex Bernot Deserved Better

It's a good thing that the standard cliche players and coaches often toss out when referring to awards is that they're nice, but it still all about the team.

Still ... Alex Bernot deserved better from the voters who selected the 2007 NSCAA All-Great Lakes region team. Just announced December 20, Bernot -- who incidentally was the Ohio Athletic Conference Forward of the Year this season -- was relegated to third team states on the region team.

Relegated is the key word here. Certainly it is an honor in itself to be named to the team, but the honor loses its luster when two members of Bernot's conference received first team accolades. Two guys who Bernot supposedly beat out for the conference award. Considering Bernot was a senior, and the two first team all-region selections were sophomores, makes the selections even more mind boggling.

Well, then, it must have been the stats!

Bernot just happened to lead the entire league in points (38).

Oh, then he must have not been a team player! You know how coaches hate that!

Bernot just happened to lead the entire league in assists (14).

Surely he was a flash in the pan! A one-hit wonder!

Bernot will finish among the top five goals scorers, assist makers and point producers in John Carroll history.

Then, of course, he must not have contributed to the overall success of the team. Didn't John Carroll go 5-8-4 in 2006?

Bernot helped the team turn its record around to 13-8-1 in 2007, winning the OAC tournament (for the second time in his career) and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. JCU reached the round of 32 and lost a shootout for the chance to advance to the round of 16.

At the end of the day, what the team accomplished is far more important than anything an individual is recognized for. Still, with the collegiate career of Alex Bernot coming to an end this past November, it would have been a nice feather in the proverbial cap. At the very least, a lifetime achievement award.

Alex Bernot deserved better indeed.
