Carroll Classic Day Two

The Gold Streaks Bloggers will be posting updates throughout the second day of the Carroll Swim Classic on Sunday, Dec. 7, with blogging beginning during the final rounds that start at 4:30 p.m.

Teams from John Carroll University, Urbana University, Notre Dame College, Ohio Wesleyan University and Marshall University will be competing in this event. Please check this space continuously over the course of the two-day swim classic for the latest triumphs in the water, and how each team is fairing against the competition.

In team scoring, the John Carroll University men's team won the Swim Classic, with a score of 1,494. Ohio Wesleyan was second, with 1026, then Notre Dame College (493) and Urbana University (59).

On the women's side, Ohio Wesleyan University finished first as a team, with 1191.5. Notre Dame was second, with 1170. John Carroll women's team finished third with 1093, then Marshall University (763.5) and Urbana University (60).

Winners of the Men's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay was the John Carroll University "A" team, with Max Wilberding, David Perchinske, Nick Grady and Alex Vereshchagin. They had a time of 3:21.01.


The Women's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay was won by Marshall University. Swimmers Meghan Fillinger, Meghan Robinson, Karli Alsop and Lauren Fairbanks put together a time of 3:49.82. John Carroll's "A" Relay team of Andrea Kovacs, Heidi Benson, Liana Sved and Katie Mathews finished third with an overall time of 3:53.88.

With a ten-minute break before the Relay events, let's update you on the team standings. John Carroll's men's team is in first place, with 1,317 points. Ohio Wesleyan University is closest to JCU, with 855 points for second place. The Blue Streaks' women's team is in third, with 946 points. They are behind Notre Dame College (1049) and Ohio Wesleyan (1027.5). Still to come are the Women's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay and the Men's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.

Men's 100 Yard Butterfly winner was Eric Davis from John Carroll. He won with a time 53.74. Teammates John Reynolds and Brandon Carey finished third and fourth, respectively.

The Women's 100 Yard Butterfly winner was John Carroll's Katie Mathews with a time of 1:02.24.

The Men's 200 Yard Breaststroke winner was Ohio Wesleyan's David Gatz. He won by over 21 seconds, with a time of 2:09.21. His own teammate, Nathaniel Cook, was in second with a time of 2:30.57.

Winner of the Women's 200 Yard Breaststroke was JCU's Melissa Fillmore, who beat her preliminary time of 2:40.61 to finish with a finals time of 2:35.12.

Men's 200 Yard Freestyle winner was Chris Tuttle from Notre Dame College with a time of 1:51.99. JCU's Nick Grady finished second, just a few seconds behind Tuttle with a 1:53.05 mark.

Women's 200 Yard Freestyle winner was Notre Dame College's Emily Whittington. She won with a time of 2:03.44.

Men's 100 Yard Freestyle winner was Cameron McRae from Notre Dame College. He won with a time of 54.38.

Women's 100 Yard Backstroke winner was Marshall University's Camilla Overup with a time of 1:03.92. JCU's Samantha Mossman placed second with a time of 1:04.34.

Men's 50 Yard Freestyle winner was Alex Vereshchagin from John Carroll with a time of 21.86. Teammate Max Wilberding was second with a time of 22.55.

Women's 50 Yard Freestyle winner was JCU's own Andrea Kovacs with a time of 25.55.

Men's 400 IM winner was Kevin Fahey from Ohio Wesleyan University with a time of 4:32.11. JCU's Tom Barden was second with a time of 4:52.40.


Women's 400 IM winner was Emily Whittington from Notre Dame College with a time of 4:50.93. JCU's top swimmer, Brittany Krauth, finished fourth overall with a time of 4:55.53, with teammate Heidi Benson right behind her in fifth place with a time of 5:07.68.
